Two interrelated challenges have shadowed the field of literacy over the past twenty years: 1) persistent gaps in literacy achievement among various demographic groups and, 2) an alarming decline in performance across the grades. After reviewing key research studies on students’ thinking/reading and on school reform, the talk concludes with some implications for research and practice that hold promise for improving students’ reading performance and intellectual development.
