An Invitation to Read and Think about the Media and Diversity

What is the role of media in diversity education? How does viewing a movie, TV program or video impact our understanding of multicultural issues and of diversity in general? What role do these media play in culture and social justice interests?

Join your colleagues from around campus for an end of summer reading group to explore these questions together. We’ll meet three times. Attendance at all sessions is critically important for the quality of the discussions.

We’ll be reading The Children Are Watching: How the Media Teach about Diversity by Carlos E. Cortes.

“This ground-breaking book draws deeply from popular culture, research, and the author’s humane and engaging approach. For Cortes, diversity is a source of strength and joy. As America becomes the first genuine multicultural nation, this book is a must read.” Peter Cookson, Jr., Columbia University.

Dr. Cortes is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Riverside and on the summer faculty of Harvard Institutes for Higher Education and for Intercultural Communication. He lectures throughout the world. He is creative/cultural advisor for Nickelodeon’s “Dora the Explorer” and “Go, Diego, Go!” He will be speaking at two events at UVM on October 6.
